What is retention rate?

Retention rate answers one question: of the people you had at the start of a period, what share stayed? That works for customers (logo retention, subscription renewals) and employees (HR headcount stability). The math is the same — only the labels change.

Flip the calculator to Customer retention or Employee retention and the formula stays unified: retention = (End − New) ÷ Start × 100. Churn (customers) or turnover (employees) is simply 100 minus that number.

The retention rate formula (both sides)

Retention rate = ((End − New) ÷ Start) × 100
Churn / turnover rate = 100 − retention rate

Start is your cohort at the beginning. New is everyone who joined during the period — new customers acquired or new hires. End is the total count at period close. Subtract New from End to get how many from the original cohort remain. Divide by Start for your percentage (Zendesk, Paychex).

How to read every box — customer face

Morgan runs a subscription software company. At the start of Q1 she had 1,000 active customers. During the quarter she acquired 200 new customers and ended with 1,050 total. She opens the calculator in customer mode.

Morgan's Q1 customer retention

Retained = 1,050 − 200 = 850 customers from the original 1,000. Retention = 850 ÷ 1,000 × 100 = 85%. Churn = 15% (150 customers left). Net headcount grew by 50, but retention tells her how sticky the existing base is.

How to read every box — employee face

Jordan is an HR lead at a 120-person company. Same calculator, employee mode. On January 1 the team had 120 employees. During the year they made 15 hires and ended December with 118 people on payroll.

Jordan's annual employee retention

Retained = 118 − 15 = 103 employees from the original 120. Retention = 103 ÷ 120 × 100 ≈ 85.8%. Turnover ≈ 14.2% (17 separations). Headcount dipped slightly net, but retention isolates how well Jordan kept the people who were already there.

Common questions

What is a good customer retention rate?

It varies by industry. Many B2B SaaS businesses aim for 85–95% annual logo retention. Subscription and ecommerce benchmarks differ — track your own trend and compare within your segment.

What is a good employee retention rate?

Annual employee retention above 90% is strong in many industries. High-turnover sectors (retail, hospitality) often see lower benchmarks. Pair retention rate with voluntary vs involuntary turnover for context.

Is employee retention the same as turnover rate?

They are complements. If retention is 86%, turnover is 14%. Some HR teams report turnover as separations ÷ average headcount — this calculator uses the start-of-period cohort method, which is common for board and investor reporting.

Why subtract new customers or hires from the ending count?

New additions during the period were not in your starting cohort. Subtracting them isolates how many people you started with and still have — your true retention.
